“신화와 성경 속 인물의 비극적이거나 숭고한 순간을 극대화하기 위해 정교하게 깎아 만든 신체와 역동적인 포즈의 조각들은 저마다 환희에 차오르거나 극도로 평온한 표정을 짓는다. 심규호의 사진에서 이는 죽음과 동시에 ‘작은 죽음 (La petite mort)’. 즉, 오르가즘 이후의 일시적인 죽음을 연상시킨다.”
심규호 개인전 «LA PETITE MORT»는 2022년 출간한 동명의 사진집과 그 작업 시리즈에서 출발합니다. 작가는 이미 역사화된 고전 예술 작품을 클로즈업하고 프레이밍하면서 이상화된 신체와 성스러움, 고정된 젠더 규범적 이미지를 해체하고 재구성합니다. 과거의 순간을 영원히 고정시키는 사진 매체의 특성을 통해, 그는 유구하게 이어져 내려온 과거의 유산을 다시 한번 새로운 맥락으로 박제합니다. 본 전시는 고안된 ‘선과 악’, ‘미와 추’ 그리고 ‘정상과 비정상’ 사이에 존재하는 실재의 세계를 감각해 보기를 제안합니다.
“The intricately carved bodies and dynamic poses of these sculptures, designed to intensify the tragic or sublime moments of mythological and biblical figures, each display expressions of either ecstatic rapture or extreme tranquility. In Kyuho Shim’s photographs, this evokes both death and ‘la petite mort’—the brief, transient death that follows an orgasm.”
Kyuho Shim’s solo exhibition 𝐿𝐴 𝑃𝐸𝑇𝐼𝑇𝐸 𝑀𝑂𝑅𝑇 originates from his 2022 photo book of the same name and the series of works within it. By close-up and framing historically classical art pieces, the artist deconstructs and reconfigures idealized bodies, sanctity, and fixed gender-normative images. Utilizing the characteristic of photography that eternally fixes moments from the past, he recontextualizes these long-standing legacies. This exhibition invites viewers to sense the real world that lies between the constructed binaries of ‘good and evil,’ ‘beauty and ugliness,’ and ‘normalcy and abnormality.’
